Dear Friend,
The summer is here, and with it the sights and sounds of a different pace of life. During the summer people sit on patios for hours, get in cars to pursue adventures, kids splash in pools, families tackle trails, ball fields fill. For some reason, the warm weather gives people permission to rest and play. The reality is that our souls crave rhythms of rest and play all year long. We cannot sustain rapid paces without breaks. Running without stopping is unnatural and dangerous, and yet most of us can’t seem to escape it. This is a call to escape it before it crushes you. You matter in the midst of what you do. Stop. And. Play.
This summer, you are invited to rest and play.
This year, you are invited to rest and play.
In this life, you are invited - to rest and play.
Do you know this? It will not happen unless you first believe that you have permission to rest and play, and then get disciplined to set up rhythms for it in your own life. The beast of striving and performance does not bow to good intentions, but it will run away from someone who is disciplined against its enslavements.
I hope you a rest and play this summer. More than that, I hope that you find rhythms of rest and play in your life all year long. Prayer is communing with God. God is present in restful and fun things. He made them. He wants you to enjoy them. Below are some basic annual rhythms that can help you sustain a healthy pace in life. Get out your calendar, and schedule them. You will not be disappointed!
Here’s to some rest and play …
Happy Summertime!
